Specialist Rehabilitation and Therapy

A team of highly specialist therapists from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) have established a new private outpatient therapy service for people with neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

The team comprises of highly specialist physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists with extensive experience in the area of neurology. Appointments for private physiotherapy and occupational therapy are now available through the Private Consulting Rooms, with speech and language therapy services being introduced in the coming months.

The team will offer seamless multi-disciplinary assessment and intervention, implementing current guidelines and evidence-based practice.  Being based in the Private Consulting rooms at Queen Square allows close working both within the team and with other specialists in Queen Square.  This helps to ensure that patients are offered the opportunity to access specialist services from which they may benefit.

To learn more about this specialist service, take a look at our recent Q&A with the therapy team.

Aisling van der Walt has also written a two-part feature on fatigue management which can be accessed here.

Physiotherapy

Involves the assessment and treatment of difficulties with movement, balance and mobility.  This may be achieved through targeted strengthening, balance rehabilitation, gait re-education and posture management or a range of other modalities.

Occupational Therapy

Involves the assessment of how any physical or cognitive difficulties may affect everyday living at home, work or leisure.  Specialist services may include cognitive rehabilitation, fatigue management, splinting, upper limb rehabilitation, recommendation of suitable equipment, and activity analysis and adaptation.

Speech & Language Therapy

Involves the assessment and management of communication and swallowing problems.  Communication problems may include difficulties in forming or finding words, processing language, reading and writing. Swallowing problems include difficulties in the physical process of eating and drinking. Interventions will aim to maximise communication potential and optimise swallowing function.

All of our therapists work with people to achieve their full potential, using a goal orientated approach, with the aim of improving independence and quality of life.

Letter to Hannah Cartwright

I just wanted to thank you again for your time at my recent appointment.  When I left it struck me just how highly specialised you are. Being able to discuss things other than the physical was of great help to me, things that I had in fact given no thought to.  You have a great talent and wonderful approach. Patient testimonial
