Professor Marjan Jahanshahi

Professor of Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology

Professor Marjan Jahanshahi is an HCPC registered chartered clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. She has extensive experience of neuropsychological assessment and treatment of people with neurological and psychiatric disorders and dementia, pre and post-operative assessments for a range of surgical procedures including deep brain stimulation, pallidotomy and subthalamotomy and medico-legal assessments. She has expertise in post-diagnostic counselling and therapy to optimize psychosocial adjustment to chronic neurological illness or dementia for patients and their families. Professor Jahanshahi provides cognitive behaviour therapy for a range of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, phobias, etc. She speaks English, Farsi (Persian) and French.

Professor Jahanshahi is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at the UCL Institute of Neurology.  She qualified as a clinical psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience in 1982, after which she completed her PhD under the supervision of the late Prof. David Marsden.  For the past 30 years she has worked as a consultant clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist at the UCL Institute of Neurology; as the Head of the Cognitive-Motor Neuroscience Group and a Principal Investigator in the Functional Neurosurgery Unit for the past 15 years.  She has published 270 papers in scientific journals, and written or edited two books.  She is internationally recognized as an authority on the neuropsychology of movement disorders and the impact of chronic neurological illness on quality of life, mood and daily activities of patients and their carers and families.  Professor Jahanshahi is a member of the editorial board of six scientific journals and sits on the grant review board of Parkinson’s UK and other funding bodies.   She is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a life member of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy.
